  81. This package contains ProGuard (V.2.0) from Cetus Software.  This
  82. document contains only a brief description of the package and its
  83. features, along with instructions for its installation.  Quite detailed
  84. documentation is included in the package, but it is in archived form,
  85. and is more easily read after installation.

  87. ProGuard password-protects Windows icons, making it impossible for guest
  88. users to run selected programs simply by double-clicking on their icons
  89. in Program Manager.  ProGuard can also prevent guest users from
  90. creating, modifying, copying, moving, or deleting Program Manager icons,
  91. or from using the New, Move, Copy, Delete, and Run commands in Program
  92. Manager's File Menu.

  94. ProGuard requires the Visual Basic 3.0 dynamic link library,
  95. VBRUN300.DLL, in order to run.  This file may usually be obtained from
  96. your source for this program, or may be obtained on diskette directly
  97. from Cetus Software (P.O. Box 700, Carver, MA 02330).

  99. ProGuard is a shareware program.  This evaluation version includes
  100. all features of the program, and is not crippled in any way.  You may
  101. use it for up to 30 days, without charge (see proguard.wri for more
  102. details).  If you like the program, and wish to continue its use after
  103. this evaluation period, you are required to pay for the program (see
  104. proguard.wri for more details).  Any fee you may have paid to others
  105. (disk vendors, dealers, etc.) to obtain this evaluation version was a
  106. fee for their copying and distribution services, rather than a payment

  139. ===== Installation =====================================

  141. Please note:  ProGuard requires VBRUN300.DLL, the Visual Basic 3.0
  142. dynamic link library file.  Ideally, VBRUN300.DLL should be located in
  143. the Windows System directory (typically C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM) on a
  144. non-networked computer, or in the Windows directory on a networked PC.
  145. ProGuard may be installed without this file being present, but will not
  146. run without it.  VBRUN300.DLL may usually be obtained from your source
  147. for this program, or may be obtained on diskette directly from Cetus
  148. Software (P.O. Box 700, Carver, MA 02330).

  150. The installation procedure for ProGuard is quite simple.  The
  151. package includes a program, "INSTALL.EXE", which automates the
  152. entire process.  You will need about 700 KB of available disk space
  153. on the hard drive on which you plan to install ProGuard (though this
  154. is reduced to about 300 KB if VBRUN300.DLL is already installed).

  156. The exact steps you need to take will depend on how you received
  157. ProGuard.
  158.  
  159.  
  160. INSTALLING FROM DISKETTE
  161.  
  162. To install from diskette, you need to perform the following steps.
  163.  
  164.    o  Place the ProGuard distribution diskette in the
  165.       appropriate diskette drive.
  166.  
  167.    o  While running Windows, execute the "INSTALL.EXE" program on the
  168.       distribution diskette.  For example, if the distribution
  169.       diskette is on drive A:, type "A:\INSTALL" on the Run Line
  170.       available in Program Manager's File Menu.
  171.  
  172.    o  Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
  173.       You will have a chance to approve installation before any changes
  174.       are actually made to the contents of your hard drive.

  177. INSTALLING FROM A HARD DRIVE
  178.  
  179. If you downloaded ProGuard from a BBS (or received it in the form of
  180. archive files from some other source), you will need to perform the
  181. following steps.
  182.  
  183.    o  Extract the contents of the archive file(s) in a temporary
  184.       directory on your hard drive.  The procedure for doing this
  185.       varies, depending on the form in which you received the package.
  186.       In all likelihood, the fact that you are reading this text means
  187.       that you already have the necessary tools and knowledge to
  188.       perform this step.  If not, you should be able to obtain
  189.       directions for this from the same source from which you received
  190.       the package.

  192.    o  Execute the "INSTALL.EXE" program which you have extracted.  For
  193.       example, if the temporary directory into which you have extracted
  194.       the ProGuard package is C:\TEMPDIR, you would execute the
  195.       command, "C:\TEMPDIR\INSTALL" by double-clicking on the
  196.       "INSTALL.EXE" filename in the "C:\TEMPDIR" directory in File
  197.       Manager.

  199.    o  Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
  200.       You will have a chance to approve installation before any changes
  201.       are actually made to the contents of your hard drive.

  203.    o  When you're satisfied that the installation was successful, you
  204.       should delete the temporary directory FROM which you installed
  205.       ProGuard (C:\TEMPDIR, in the above discussion), including all its
  206.       contents.

  211. Once you've complete the installation, you should consult the documents
  212. which have been installed.  In particular, read at least the text files
  213. installed as icons in the ProGuard group in Program Manager.  You should
  214. be THOROUGHLY familiar with the effects of ProGuard's protections
  215. BEFORE invoking ANY of them.
